Laptop PCs: what to buy among the many offers on the market?

This is a question we are often asked, what laptop PCs to buy seems like a simple question but it isn't.

This is a complicated question because it does not have a single answer, but a detailed and different one based on the moment, the person and the need.

So let's try to understand what the fundamental points of this research are and what points to establish before dedicating ourselves to the topic of what to buy laptop PCs .

Before proceeding with the purchase you must first ask yourself some essential questions: laptop

  • What are your needs?
  • What functions will you use your laptop for?
  • What budget do you have for your purchase?

Start from these three questions, real cornerstones in evaluating what laptops to buy.

Let's look at them better.

Laptops what to buy? Whatever works best for your needs!

Do you need extreme portability? Or will you just use it for browsing and checking email? Do you need it for gaming or for editing software? Is the main purpose gaming?

What functions will you use your laptop for?

Do you need a large monitor? Do you want something touch or reversible? Do you need to connect your laptop to one or more external screens? Do you need to connect any particular peripheral to it? Do you need it to have a DVD player?

Laptops what to buy? Budget

Having a maximum spending limit is an indispensable factor to start selecting the various priorities. Setting a limit also allows us to evaluate whether to purchase refurbished laptops or refurbished laptops instead of new machines. A budget idea will then also allow us to verify the opportunities such as those offered by portable PCs with more attention and focus.

The moment we have an answer to the three basic questions we will be able to start thinking about more specific questions relating to hardware and software, in a sort of "Guess Who?" which without paying too much attention to the brands will allow us to select the most suitable laptop for our needs.

Here are the selection questions:

Format

The first thing we will have to think about is the format of our laptop. In this area, the answers to the questions mentioned above will be of great help to us, as we will quickly choose between traditional laptop PCs , lightweight Ultrabook computers and 2-in-1 or convertible computers.

Screen size

We have defined what form factor our laptop must have, now we need to decide what screen size we want. If we have opted for portability, we will choose a small screen, in the range up to 12 inches. If we want something in between, we'll go with a 13 or 14 inch instead. However, if the laptop will be our main machine and we will have to do editing or play games on it, we will be better off choosing the 15 inch. Finally, if our need is for a large screen and portability is not so important, we can also opt for a 17 or 18 inch.

CPU (processor) laptop

This component is the brain of the computer. The processor performs all the calculations necessary for the various applications and processes the data through the computing units. In recent years, CPUs have started to accumulate more and more cores and a higher frequency, in order to allow a greater number of calculations in less time.

So much processing power has a direct cost (that of the processor) and indirect cost (greater consumption, therefore a better performing battery etc.) for a value that can significantly influence the total cost of our laptop PC, so here's why having ideas having a clear understanding of the future use of our laptop becomes indispensable.

GPU (video card)

Do we need to connect an external monitor? Or to run "heavy" and specific applications from a graphics point of view? If the answer is yes, we will have to select a laptop with an external video card , otherwise, the one integrated on the motherboard will be more than sufficient for our needs.

Storage

Is our need to archive and have lots of data available or do we think we have little material or make use of cloud solutions? And then, do we prefer a more delicate and bulky but economical mechanical hard disk or a fast and compact solid state disk (SSD)?

For each of these technical parameters we will have to carefully evaluate our present and future needs. The ideal is to find the right size that allows us to spend the right amount for a laptop suitable for our current and future needs (perhaps considering a period of use equal to 3 or 5 years).

In addition to the most important factors, we will find others over which we will have less power of choice, but they will often be consequences of what we selected in the previous points.

Other characteristics.

Drums. Obviously we always want the maximum possible autonomy, but there is a physical and price limit to consider, also depending on the energy consumption of our processor.

Ports: at least a couple of "traditional" USBs, a USB 3.0 and maybe even an HDMI port, there are never enough ports on a laptop, but they can be limited by the price range and size of the laptop itself.

Connectivity: in a wireless world, the presence of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi is essential. This is also available in many different versions and with different features.

Now that we know how we would like our laptop we will have to mediate what we would like with what we can afford.

Often our "needs" or "wants" exceed our availability and we find ourselves forced to make do. But we have some possibilities that we should evaluate to “stay on budget”.

Laptop PCs: what to buy, spending what we would like

If our ideal laptop does not fit into our budget we can consider giving up something in order to lower the cost, or opt for one of the following shortcuts:

Laptop PCs offers

Every day hundreds of laptops are put on offer online or in physical stores. With a little patience and research we will be able to find important discounts on the type of computer we want, in order to get closer to what our budget is.

Refurbished laptops

Refurbished or refurbished laptops are another great alternative. These are portable PCs that are often comparable to new or in perfect condition, which we can purchase at a significantly lower price than the list price.

Laptops what to buy

In a world of brands, models, continuous new releases and planned obsolescence, there is something to get lost when you go looking for a new laptop to buy. This is why before we start looking at models and prices we will have to do some preparatory work and be ready and with clear ideas.
