Around the central nucleus of the family we then find the "slightly crazy" grandmother, uncle Fester, the butler Lerch and obviously Mano, a limb with a life of its own always ready to help and anticipate Gomez's requests.

All of this is Wednesday's birthplace, which in this series is secondary, given that it is focused on the character of Wednesday Addams, now a teenager, grappling with the world and with psychic and paranormal powers that are developing during her process of growth.

The new Netflix series launches on Wednesday

Cinematic 2022 was the scene of frantic anticipation towards the launch date of this series. Launched on November 23rd exclusively on Netflix and anticipated for the Italian market by an exclusive screening and presentation by Tim Burton during the Lucca Comics and Games festival.

So just over a month for Wednesday, a period of time that was enough to shatter any record. Wednesday Addams is in fact the most watched series ever on a streaming channel and the most awaited and clicked on the platform.

The success of the series then went beyond the confines of Netflix , also landing on social media, where the outfits and dances inspired by Wednesday quickly went viral.

There are many reasons that have convinced millions of people to dedicate some time to the new Netflix series.

The leading actress, Jenna Ortega can be considered an emerging movie star. She is joined by a cast of highly respected famous actors, starting with Catherine Zeta-Jones who plays the role of Morticia and Luis Guzmán who plays Gomez.

Like every Tim Burton product, every detail is taken care of at the highest level. The settings, makeup and costumes are top notch and alone are worth watching the series.

The series is inspired by the Addams Family, but is totally new, with a different point of view, explored for the first time by the director

The series also features Christina Ricci, probably the most famous Wednesday Addams on TV. Tim Burton created a special role for her that interacts and influences that of Wednesday. In fact, Ricci plays the extravagant professor Marylin Thornwill, protagonist of the teaching staff of the Nevermore Academy.

It is an eight-episode series, with a sequel already planned. The first series is conclusive but leaves many doors open to new developments and twists.

Plot, without spoilers

Protagonist of the entire series, Wednesday Addams is a high school age student. She attends high school in her community where, as a good older sister, she defends her brother Pugsley from the harassment and bullying of her classmates. A defense in perfect Addams style, which results in the almost murder of one of the students.

A disproportionate reaction also for the Addams family, with Morticia and Gomez deciding to take action by sending Wednesday to a private school and boarding school for special students (not in a good way). “Family” school, given that Morticia and Gomez have already gone to Riverdale Academy in their time.

A move that Wednesday doesn't like very much, at least initially. It will take a bit of adaptation and the creation of some friendships to change the mind of the teenager who will use her psychic and supernatural powers to investigate.

An investigation in two different directions, on the one hand into the history of the family, with a search into an almost hidden event that occurred before Wednesday's birth in the Addams family.

On the other, an investigation involving the entire town that hosts the school and its founder, Joseph Crackstone, a religious fanatic at the head of a sect of pilgrims who had exterminated the previous settlers, accusing them of witchcraft. Among the same Goody Addams, Wednesday's distant ancestor of Mexican origins, who escaped the slaughter and the one who stops Crackstone's madness by killing him.

Filming location

A series about the Addams Family could not have a location other than Romania. Much of the story is set in the capital of this state and in the Cantacuzino castle. Places already famous for the myth of Dracula will certainly benefit from a new source of tourism, which will bring fans from all over the world to visit the places where this cult series is set.

Reception of the series

As already indicated, the Wednesday Addams series has achieved great success.

This series debuted at number one in the most viewed product rankings in at least 83 countries

The series holds the record for the most hours watched in a week with more than 341 million hours viewed in the first season

On December 6, 2022, it became the third most-watched English-language Netflix series in the platform's history

The release of the series has "revitalized" everything it touched. An example of this is the song Goo Goo Muck by the Cramps which, after being "danced" by Wednesday, is back in vogue.
